Investigators quickly turned their attention to boyfriend Brian Laundrie when he returned home without Petito. Before they could bring him in for questioning, he disappeared.
Laundrie was later found dead in a national park. In a diary found close to him, he admitted to having killed his girlfriend.

The case received enormous international attention.
In May 2023, Petito’s parents, Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, filed a lawsuit against Laundrie’s parents, and their attorney Steve Bertolino.
FBI: Boyfriend admitted to murder in diary
The lawsuit itself against Chris and Roberta Laundrie stated that the Petito family believed that they and the lawyer knew that Gabby was dead before she was found on September 19.
Gabby’s parents were convinced that Chris and Roberta Laundrie learned their daughter was dead when Brian was at their home in early September 2021, before he escaped.
Now reporting CNN that the parties have entered into a settlement. The details of the resolution shall be confidential.

“Joseph and Tara (Gabby’s stepmother, editor’s note) have reluctantly agreed to the agreement after a long period of mediation to avoid further legal expenses and prolonged conflict,” writes the news website.
A lawyer for the Laundrie family has stated that the family is happy to put the case behind them.
