“The Future of Sélestat Hospital: Recruitment Difficulties and a 10 Million Euro Deficit”

A deficit of 10 million euros announced at the end of 2023 for the GHSO and recruitment difficulties in several departments: the future of the hospital of Sélestat worries the mayor of the commune, Marcel Bauer. “We cannot continue like this, on the one hand the expenses which increase and on the other the income which stagnates.”

“I will take care of it personally”

This is what he explained to Emmanuel Macron during his trip to Alsace
April 19. “I had prepared a file for him, when at the end of the meeting I proposed it to him, I said to him, Mr. President, I give it to your service? He replied, no no no, give it to him me. I’ll take care of it personally.”

Hurry up. In Sélestat**, the problem of the deficit is already felt on a daily basis for caregivers.** Arbitrations are necessary for the purchase of equipment. “If you are missing a thermometer, for example, you only have one for the whole service. On a tour, it takes much longer than if you had twonotes Nadia Baehr, secretary of the CFDT at the GHSO. It creates bad working conditions.”

Increasingly complicated recruitment

This change in working conditions makes it even more difficult to recruit caregivers. However, in a hospital like Sélestat, the absence of one or two doctors can weaken the survival of a department and, by extension, of the entire establishment. “All the services stand together, the various specialties, gynecology, resuscitation, anesthesia, pediatrics, are necessary to run a hospital”, emphasizes Doctor Jean-Marie Minoux, from the Smur in Sélestat.

The difficulties encountered by the Sélestat hospital are common to many French hospitals. “From the moment the prices are aberrant compared to the costs, we can only be in deficit”adds Dr. Minoux.
