Funny inconsistencies are a normal part of the filmmaking process and don’t change our love for great films. In Vladimir Menshov’s Oscar-winning and truly popular film Moscow Doesn’t Believe in Tears, there are several bloopers and just funny moments at once. Perhaps the most noticeable – with a carpet, also known as … a plaid.
Remember the episode from the second series, in which Katerina (Vera Alentova) comes to her lover Volodya (Oleg Tabakov) to make love? By the way, that scene was originally more explicit, but censorship forced to cut out all the “obscenity” from there. Suddenly, Volodya’s mother-in-law calls at the door, disrupting the lovers’ date. We see Katerina half-dressed against the background of a carpet with stripes – it hangs on the wall, as was customary in those days. And it is also decorated with a weapon hung from above.
Time passes, Katerina has an affair with Gosha (Aleksey Batalov), he invites her to a picnic outside the city. While the kebab is being prepared, the tired heroine is dozing in a folding chair, and Gosha carefully covers her … with the same carpet from the apartment of her former lover. As they say, with a slight movement of the hand, the carpet turns into an elegant plaid.
Why was it reused? After all, the film crew clearly did not have a shortage of props, even the smallest details in the film were worked out carefully and with love. Some viewers joked that perhaps the plaid carpet was Volodya’s farewell gift to Katerina, and this is a brilliant idea. But still it is difficult to imagine that the lover quietly removed the carpet from the wall without causing questions from his wife.
So it’s more like a blooper, but cute and funny – for an attentive viewer. Such “Easter eggs” only once again push to re-watch your favorite movie.
