The Fortnite World Cup is officially canceled

The fears of the fans have been confirmed: In 2020 there will be no Fortnite World Cup, instead an emergency plan from Epic Games will come into force.

For a long time there was silence about the future of Fortnite’s competitive scene in times of the Corona crisis. In April Epic Games asked for patience, on the night of Friday (May 1st) there was an official announcement via Twitter, in which the developer revealed how to proceed in 2020. The plan looks like this: Events in which players and audience are present do not take place. Instead, Epic Games wants to host several tournaments online. This does not apply to the Fortnite World Cup, because players from different continents compete against each other at the official World Cup.

Accordingly, it is not possible to transport the tournament into an online environment. In view of the global health situation, letting the participants fly in is also not an option. Epic Games has therefore completely canceled the World Cup and thus put a conclusion to this topic. The eSport athletes still have regular cash cups and the Fortnite Champion Series. Both tournament formats will continue online – more detailed schedules will follow. Epic Games is also confident that Fortnite 2021 will again be played in the form of large offline events and the World Cup can make its comeback.
