The first lychees of the season are ready to be harvested – New Caledonia the 1st

The capricious weather of recent months has disrupted their cycle, but this year the trees seem to be more generous than previous ones. This is the case in the Houaïlou region, where this fruit was introduced for the first time in the 19th century by the Reunion Islander Jolimont Kabar.

This year, the mango is overtaken by a star in a red dress: the lychee! Sweet, tangy, the Caledonians’ favorite fruit announces the summer holidays. But the weather disrupted the smooth fruiting of the trees. “The wind blew to one sidedescribes Jacob Tyouje, inhabitant of the tribe of Koé in Touho. That’s why it only faces the other side.” It is on a small stall, on the side of the road, that he sells his fruits. As soon as they are placed, they find buyers.

According to specialists from the DDEE, the Directorate of Economic Development and the Environment of the Northern Province, the coastal zone is strongly impacted by several factors: “This is linked to a very dry period, irrigation problems on certain plots, and a lot of wind which causes the fruits to fall.explains Glenn Sautron, agricultural technician. So production is not that important.”

The Bä tribe, in the commune of Houailou, is an exception. The bay and the ridge lines form a shield against unstable weather. Here, the trees are loaded with lychees thanks to a microclimate. “This is an exceptional tribesays Jean-Jacques Assawa, a resident. We have a dual climatology: the sea is five minutes away, and the humid forest less than a quarter of an hour away. The two climates come together, which makes Bä special.” If the season varies depending on the location, the Bä tribe will defend the honor of the lychee festival in Houaïlou, which will be held on December 9 at the Gondé tribe.
