The first case of a dangerous disease detected in Bulgaria this year

The first case of yersiniosis in 2021 was discovered in Bulgaria last week. This was announced by the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases.

The causative agents of the disease, also known as “dirty refrigerator disease”, are dangerous intestinal bacteria. They enter the refrigerator through contaminated fruits and vegetables and can then be transferred to milk and meat. The humid environment and the low temperature are the ideal conditions for their reproduction.

After infection, a person falls within the incubation period of the disease, when he becomes a carrier of the infection, but still does not show the corresponding symptoms.

Usually in yersiniosis this period is within 1-2 weeks, after which the general condition gradually worsens. The temperature rises to 38-39 degrees, there is a feeling of pain in the muscles and joints, headache, diarrhea, pain in the abdomen and right hypochondrium. Arthritis is a complication of the infection. The joints become swollen and painful, and the skin above them becomes red.

As a prevention against the disease, doctors advise to store only cleaned and dry products and foods in the refrigerator.

Data from the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases show that 2 cases of campylobacteriosis, 20 cases of enterocolitis, 3 cases of choleenteritis, 6 cases of rotavirus gastroenteritis and 3 cases of salmonellosis were registered last week.

Children with chickenpox have also doubled in number. 145 were diagnosed with lentils, compared to 73 in the previous week.

Since the beginning of the year, 799 cases have been reported in the country. However, thanks to the anti-epidemic measures imposed due to COVID-19, the number of chickenpox patients is much lower compared to the same period last year. Then 8533 infected people were registered.

There have been 6 cases of scarlet fever and 24 cases of viral hepatitis in the past week.
