The Finnish parliamentary elections result in Conservatives emerging victorious, leading to the loss of Prime Minister Marina’s position.

This means that Marin will likely be replaced by the conservative leader Peteri Orpo as the head of the Finnish government.

The results, after almost all votes have been counted, show that the NKP has received 20.8% of the vote and 48 seats in the 200-member Finnish parliament.

In these elections, the top three most popular parties showed very similar results.

The national-conservative Finnish party came in second place, receiving 20% of the vote and 46 mandates.

But Prime Minister Marin’s Social Democrats had to settle for 19.9% of the vote and 43 seats, even more than in the previous election four years ago.

The opportunity to form the government is usually entrusted to the leader of the party with the most votes.

This means that the position of prime minister could be won by the leader of the NKP, Peteri Orpo. The 53-year-old Orpo has previously held various positions in the Finnish government, being the Minister of the Interior, Agriculture and Finance.

Orpo will have to decide whether to choose the Finnish Party or the Social Democrats as the main coalition partner. Ideologically, the NKP’s cooperation with the Finnish Party would be closer.

This could cause foreign policy problems, because the Finnish party has declared withdrawal from the European Union as its long-term goal.

The 37-year-old Marina was one of the youngest country leaders in Europe, and the handsome prime minister polished Finland’s image even outside the country’s borders.

Marina successfully led the country through the Covid-19 pandemic, showed unwavering support for Ukraine after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and together with Finnish President Sauli Niinisti, achieved that Finland will soon become a member of NATO.

But some voters did not like her youthful behavior and entertainment, while conservatives sharply criticized the economic policies of the Social Democrat government.
