The finances of the hunters of Touraine weighed down by… the war in Ukraine

This is an unintended consequence of the conflict in Ukraine. Cvery year, hunters in Touraine (Indre-et-Loire) have to pay farmers for damage done to crops by wild boar. However, this compensation is indexed to the price of cereals, which has soared since the start of the war in Ukraine, reports The New Republic.

For the 2022 harvest, the compensation to be paid to farmers amounts to more than two million euros. But the Federation of Hunters of Touraine does not want to ask its members to put their hands in the wallet.

The hunt begins before fall

“At 1 million euros in 2021, we assumed. Last April, at 1.5 million euros, we still assumed, but by tapping into the reserves of the federation. Tomorrow, at 2 million, it’s not playable “, deplores Alain Belloy, president of the hunters of Indre-et-Loire. And to add: “I can’t ask my hunters to pay more”.

In a Facebook post published Monday, August 1, 2022, he calls for the start of the hunts this summer to “take” as many boars as possible. And therefore reduce the damage caused by these beasts.
