This year’s theme “Being Together” is echoed in the list of nominees: among the nominated works is one of the largest buildings in the history of Latvia – the Song Festival Stage in Mežaparks, where more than 40 thousand people can gather, and four individual residential houses for families. relatives and friends. The MAD Architectural Space, created by NRJA Architects, brought together the architectural community, while Lindenholm’s residential area offers green, car-free yards to meet neighbors. ” Evelīna Ozola, a representative of the selection jury of the Latvian Architecture Annual Award 2021, comments on the selection of nominees.

The selection jury of the Latvian Architecture of the Year Award 2021 consists of architects and last year’s award recipients Andris Kronbergs, Ilze Liepiņa and Oskars Vāvere, architect and urbanist Evelīna Ozola, artist Ēriks Božis, writer and poet Inga Gaile, as well as director Uģis. In the next stage of the competition, the 11 nominated works will be evaluated and the decision on the main prizes will be made by the Final Jury.

Within the framework of the Latvian Architecture Annual Award 2021, it will be possible to see an exhibition of nominees’ works, which will open on August 23. Just like last year, this year the exhibition will be displayed in the urban environment of Riga – in the advertising stands placed by JCDecaux. With this exhibition, we encourage those interested to spend a day going on a joint excursion through the urban environment of Riga, thus getting to know not only the works of the nominees, but also the city itself. On August 25, a discussion on modern architectural processes will take place, but already on August 27, professional lectures will take place and also the most anticipated event – the solemn ceremony of the Latvian Architecture Annual Award 2021. Nominees and other interested people who will have an active Covid-19 certificate will be invited to participate in the ceremony, thus creating an atmosphere corresponding to the unifying theme of this year’s Architecture Annual Awards “TO BE TOGETHER”.

“The pursuit of environmental design, urban planning and architecture undoubtedly involves researching, understanding and embodying human and societal needs in plans, actions and, ultimately, buildings. Thus, the interpretation of the concept – the phrase “TO BE TOTAL” in the practice of architectural and environmental design, in the conditions of global overheating, pandemic and post-pandemic, in the opinion of the jury, is an important and evaluable factor when evaluating the architectural annual award. How and whether the work promotes or does not appreciate the important condition of being together, for example, how the layout, functionality and atmosphere of public buildings promote or do not support the meeting, cooperation and all kinds of creative expressions of building users. Or, what is the impact of publicly funded facilities on society as a whole – has it produced a visible “common public good” in terms of education, ethics and other similar parameters? ” Andris Kronbergs, a representative of the selection jury of the Latvian Architecture Annual Award 2021, commented on the importance of the main topic.

All works submitted to the Latvian Architecture Annual Award are evaluated according to the same and equally important criteria: idea and concept, project unity or whether the work can be considered as a whole, compliance with the project task, context and scale, diligence and thoroughness, as well as social significance and emotional impact .

The Latvian Architecture Annual Award is an annual national architecture competition with the aim of identifying and popularizing the best performances of Latvian architecture and promoting the high-quality development of architecture. The annual award is the largest event of the year in Latvian architecture, recognized as a nationally significant event, and the award itself is the highest award in Latvian architecture. The Latvian Architecture of the Year Award is organized by the Latvian Union of Architects in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia.
