Christie’s auction house, with locations in London and New York, ad on Thursday the sale to private owners of a piece of the Moon called NWA 12691. It is the fifth largest lunar object found on our planet; It weighs 13.5 kilos, and one Christie’s expert described it as “the probably largest specimen to hit the market of all time.”
NWA 12691 is believed to have detached from the Moon’s surface after a collision with an asteroid, and its arrival on Earth would have occurred alongside meteorites hundreds or thousands of years ago. The piece was discovered in 2018 in North Africa, and its price is estimated at around £ 2m ($ 2.5m).
