The EU will impose sanctions on Lukashenko and 14 more officials – Abroad – News

The sanctions will take effect on Friday, when EU member states have completed the written procedure for their imposition, sources said.

Member States agreed on sanctions on Wednesday.

Sanctions will be imposed on Lukashenko, his son Viktor and 13 other officials responsible for the repression after the 9 August elections.

Mr Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus for 26 years, was not on the original EU sanctions list of 40 people responsible for falsifying the results of the presidential election and suppressing protests. These people have been denied entry to the EU and their funds in the EU have been frozen.

EU ambassadors were presented for approval on Wednesday with a second list of 15 people, including Lukashenko.

The sanctions are intended to support the mass protests against the Lukashenko regime in Belarus.
