The epidemiologist has identified a new possible risk group for COVID-19

It is known that people over 65 years of age and people with chronic diseases are at risk for COVID-19. Is it possible to add to this group of people who have already suffered pneumonia, the correspondent of Rosbalta was told by Lidia Soprun, assistant of the Department of Health Organization and Medical Law of St. Petersburg State University.

“If you once suffered pneumonia, you cannot definitely put you at risk for coronavirus. Firstly, all people have different immunity, and secondly – different age, gender, set of chronic diseases. Thirdly, there are factors of professional activity. If a person, for example, works in production with asbestos or other chemicals, he may develop pneumoconiosis, which affects the respiratory system. In this case, of course, he is more likely to suffer from acute respiratory infections – any, not only COVID-19, ”said Soprun.

According to the expert, it is obvious that if a 37-year-old man had pneumonia at the age of 10, his lungs had long regenerated. The question of what pneumonia was – bilateral or focal, and what etiology – bacterial or developed due to work with chemistry, is also important.

“If a person had pneumonia six months ago, it’s hard to say how he will transfer COVID-19 now. There are no such studies yet, and a correlation between a history of pneumonia and the course of coronavirus infection has not been identified. However, it is obvious that with age, the number of chronic pathologies increases, and they exacerbate the process of any acute respiratory infection, including coronavirus, ”summarizes Lidia Soprun.

Recall that at risk for COVID-19 are older people and those who suffer from chronic diseases. Thus, according to the WHO analysis, the risk of death from coronavirus is increased by pathologies of the heart and blood vessels, diabetes mellitus, chronic lung diseases, hypertension and oncological diseases. Also, according to the WHO, men die more often from coronavirus infection than women.
