The end of the manual gearboxes is approaching

Automotive News Canada predicts that the advent of mandatory safety technologies could accelerate the end of manual transmissions from cars. One of the active safety systems such as automatic braking technology does not work well with a manual transmission. This system is one of many that will become mandatory when installing new cars next year in the EU

As the proliferation of electric vehicles (automatic) and hybrids (classic automatic or CVT transmissions) progressed, cars equipped with a manual transmission accounted for a very small percentage of sales in North America, but their percentage also declined in Europe.

The automatic emergency stop system works much easier with automatic transmissions. Mazda Canada reports that in 2016, 19.2% of cars sold were equipped with manual transmissions, and in 2020 that number dropped to just 6.4%.

The big reduction in sales of manual gearboxes will soon not be profitable for the companies themselves to produce them and maintain factory lines with this type of transmission.

The global market for manual transmissions is now 17.1% worldwide and only 1.2% in North America.
