The end of love in Budějovice. The transport company becomes more expensive, seniors will also pay

A novelty in České Budějovice public transport will be the possibility to pay for the fare card directly in the car from mid-December.

Českobudějovická MHD, which is one of the cheapest cities among comparable cities, will become more expensive from the New Year. The adjustment of fare prices was approved on Monday by city councilors on the recommendation of the Transport Company of the City of České Budějovice (DPMCB). It is a response to the sharp rise in costs and the loss of passengers during the covid period.

The price increase will affect individual and time tickets. The new passenger will pay 20 crowns (today 16 CZK) for the basic 60-minute ticket, the same ticket for the child will now cost 10 crowns (today 7 CZK). On the contrary, a 60-minute SMS ticket will be cheaper, which today costs 25 crowns, and its price will now be compared with a paper ticket (20 CZK).

Passengers who use subscriptions will have to reach deeper into their pockets. The year-round basic coupon will now cost CZK 3,990, which is 360 crowns more than today. Free riding for seniors between the ages of 65 and 75 also ends. So far, it has been enough for them to buy an annual pass for 10 crowns, from the new year they will pay 500 crowns a year. Public transport for seniors over the age of 75 will remain free, for which a new ID card will suffice.

An overview of the new prices that will apply from January 2022 published by the DPMCB at their site. Present the price list is here. Already purchased prepaid tickets will be valid for holders until the end of their validity period.

“We are reluctant to take an unpopular increase in fares, but I am convinced that this is the only way to further develop the quality of České Budějovice public transport. The costs of its operation this year by 21 million crowns exceeded revenues from fares, including agreed compensations. If we were to maintain one of the cheapest tickets in the Czech Republic, we would have to reduce traffic performance or maintain the existing ones at the expense of higher compensation from customers. “ said DPMCB Director Slavoj Dolejš. The costs to the transport company are rising due to the rising price of energy, fuel or spare parts. The lack of drivers plays a crucial role, in September the DPMCB increased wages.
