How to defeat a virus and get out of a crisis

The coronavirus epidemic has a shocking global scope, and countries choose different strategies to combat it. Some, realizing the danger at an early stage, began to act quickly, others deny the seriousness of the threat and do not take special measures. Countries such as Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea have been able to curb the spread of the disease through testing, contact tracing, and quarantine. However, there are still risks, which, for example, has recently been recognized by Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long.

The countries of Western Europe and the USA can only envy such a state of affairs. They were caught off guard by the epidemic. Recognition of its danger was late, medical equipment and protective equipment were not enough – it was necessary to take super-strict measures to limit social contacts, only to slow down the spread of COVID-19 and reduce pressure on the healthcare system.

Different infection rates and differences in cultural and historical traditions gave rise to different control strategies. For example, in France there are more stringent restrictions on the movement of citizens than in neighboring Belgium and Germany. In the United States, decisions on restrictive measures are taken at the county level. Donald Trump and the Republican Party are striving to centrally overcome the crisis and stabilize the situation as soon as possible, including in connection with the proximity of the upcoming presidential elections this fall. But some Republican governors are rather reluctant to impose severe social restrictions (for example, in Florida and Mississippi), while, for example, the Ohio Governor was one of the first to introduce strict antiviral measures a month ago – and succeeded in slowing the spread of the disease in the state.
