The Eiffel Tower is closed for the 5th day – 2024-02-24 10:25:35

The Eiffel Tower is closed for a fifth day as workers continue their strike over the management of the monument, according to labor unions.

This mobilization at one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions is the second in two months, in protest at what the unions say is insufficient investment.

If the strike lasts until Sunday afternoon, it will be the largest strike in the recent history of the monument. In the fall of 1998, the Eiffel Tower was closed for six and a half days.

Increase in tickets

The operator of the Tower (SETE) has advised those who have booked tickets to check the website before going to the Tower or postpone it, confirming that in any case they will be compensated.

Unions have criticized SETE for basing its business model on what they say is an inflated estimate of future visitor numbers, while underestimating repair and maintenance costs. They also accuse the mayor of charging the operator of the Eiffel Tower a lease fee they say is too high, siphoning off funds for necessary maintenance work.

According to SETE he stated that the new measures will include a 20% increase in ticket prices.
