The Effects of Eliminating Salt from Your Diet: What Happens and How to Balance It

In Italy we tend to eat everything too salty. What would happen if we stopped using salt? Incredible.

Most people, in Italy but not only, use too much salt. Stopping using it can cause truly incredible effects on our body.

There are people who add salt to food before even tasting it. This is a consolidated and almost automatic habit which is common to all Italians, but not only. In the Western world we now tend to eat more than we need and consume too many fatty foods and too much salt.

However, this ingredient should not be demonized. As with anything else, it’s excess that is bad for your health. Eliminating it completely or reducing it a lot could have truly incredible effects on our body.

Salt: Here’s what happens if you eliminate it

Some people can’t even imagine that you can eat something without adding salt. Nevertheless excessive use can cause serious damage to our health including hypertension. Let’s see what would happen to our body if we decided to eliminate salt.

There are two types of salt which can commonly be found in supermarkets: the sea salt and rock salt. Sea salt is what is extracted from the sea. Rock salt, on the other hand, is extracted from salt quarries. The latter is richer in iodine and is therefore suitable for those suffering from hypothyroidism as it stimulates the thyroid.

Salt, if consumed in excess, is certainly not good for you. The main problems linked to salt abuse are high blood pressure and water retention. The latter results in unsightly swelling localized especially on the thighs and abdomen. High blood pressure, however, if neglected, can lead to much more serious consequences such as strokes and heart attacks. However also completely eliminating salt from our table is absolutely not good.

As experts point out, salt also performs important functions that concern, above all, the brain. Therefore eliminating it completely can, in the long run, lead to the development of neurological problems. Furthermore, completely eliminating salt can lower your blood pressure too much and cause fainting. It’s all about consuming the right amount which, according to the latest data from the World Health Organization, is 6 grams per day.

Of course, we must not only take into account the salt we add but also what is already naturally present in foods. Indeed all foods already contain a certain amount of salt. In particular, mature cheeses, cured meats, red meat and sauces are rich in salt. Therefore it is best not to overindulge in these foods but to consume them only occasionally and instead give priority to fresh, low-fat dairy products such as ricotta and cottage cheese, fish, vegetables and fruit, legumes and dried fruit.
