The Earth’s Troposphere: Importance, Functions, and Atmospheric Layers

The Earth has several layers of atmosphere in it, and the first layer is called the troposphere.

The troposphere is the lowest layer of the earth’s atmosphere and is the first layer in contact with the earth’s surface.

A characteristic feature of the troposphere is the large amount of pollutants and greenhouse gases that cause global warming and climate change.

This layer is very important because it contains the air we breathe and is involved in maintaining the earth’s temperature so that it is neither too hot nor too cold.

The atmospheric layer has a fairly significant thickness, reaching around 7-20 km.

Apart from that, in this layer there are a large number of atmospheric gases which are the main constituents of the earth’s atmosphere, such as nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide.

It cannot be denied that the troposphere at an altitude of around 7-20 kilometers above the earth’s surface is the most important air layer for life on earth.

Functions of the Earth’s Troposphere

The troposphere layer plays a very crucial role in maintaining the continuity of life on Earth.

The existence of this atmospheric layer is very important for the survival of humans and other living creatures on Earth.

Following are the functions of the Earth’s troposphere:

This layer contains the oxygen we breathe and the carbon dioxide needed by plants for photosynthesis. The troposphere also acts as a protector from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The troposphere plays an important role in shaping weather phenomena such as rain, snow and storms. Temperature differences between the layers of the troposphere cause air movement, which produces differences in air pressure and forms clouds and winds.

Atmospheric Layers on Earth

Apart from the troposphere layer, there are 4 other layers of the earth, namely as follows:

1. Stratosphere

The stratosphere is the layer of the atmosphere that is located directly above the troposphere layer and is between a height of 10 km and 50 km from the earth’s surface.

There is a significant temperature difference between the stratosphere and the troposphere, where the stratosphere has a higher temperature in its upper layer.

The upper part of the stratosphere is also known as the ozone layer because of the relatively high concentration of ozone which is able to absorb UV radiation.

Therefore, the stratosphere has a very important role in maintaining the balance of the Earth’s ecosystem and human health.

With ozone in the stratosphere, we can be protected from exposure to dangerous ultraviolet rays.

These layers have interesting properties, especially with regard to fairly constant temperatures at certain variable altitudes.

However, as the altitude increases, this layer tends to gradually increase in temperature.

Not only that, there are other factors that influence the heating of this layer, namely the role of absorption of ultraviolet radiation carried out by the ozone molecules contained in it.

2. Mesosphere

The mesosphere is a layer of the atmosphere that is located between the stratosphere and the thermosphere.

This shows that the mesosphere is located at a higher altitude than the stratosphere, but is still below the thermosphere.

The mesosphere has unique characteristics, such as the temperature decreasing with increasing altitude and gas molecules being rare there.

This layer has the coldest temperature in the atmosphere, namely the lowest can reach -120 degrees Celsius.

If understood further, the mesosphere can be called one of the atmospheric layers that is very important for the Earth.

3. Thermosphere

The thermosphere is the thickest atmospheric layer in the Earth’s atmosphere.

In it there are various important processes that affect the climate and conditions on earth, such as the process of radiation and heat transmission.

This layer consists of very hot gases, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen.

Located above the equator and about 500 km above the Earth’s surface.

The existence of the thermosphere is very important because of its role as a barrier to harmful radiation from outer space and allows the delivery of radio broadcasts.

4. Exosphere

The exosphere is the layer of the Earth’s atmosphere that is located outside the Earth’s atmosphere and directly borders outer space.

The most abundant gas element in the exosphere layer is hydrogen, the lightest element in the universe.

Because it is located on the outside of the Earth, the exosphere layer has a useful function for the Earth, namely protecting the Earth from celestial objects, as well as reflecting sunlight through meteoritic dust particles.
