The dormitory was invaded by cockroaches

– At first I did not quite know what it was, says Emilie Jakobsen Sæbø from Haugesund.

She talks about some animals she discovered after she moved into a student dormitory in Bergen just over a week ago, where she is studying Spanish.

The animals turned out to be cockroaches, she says in an article in Bergens Tidende Wednesday.

– In bed and wardrobe

She realized that it was cockroaches two or three days after she moved in. Then she had sent the family pictures of the small animals that crawled around in the student dormitory at Fantoft in Bergen.

– Then I was very scared, she tells Dagbladet.

From then on she became more aware of the unpleasant animals.

– I found them everywhere. They crawled on the floor and walls and I found them in the bed and the closet. It took a while before I found them in the kitchen, because I had almost no food there. They did not get food from me, so to speak, she says.

When she contacted Sammen (Studentsamskipnaden på Vestlandet) last week, they asked her to contact the cleaning department.

Cockroach invasion

Later, there were also people who set traps.

Nevertheless, the cockroach invasion continued to wreak havoc on both daily life and studies.

– I have done everything I could to be as neat and clean as possible, but it is despairing to note that the cockroaches are popping up from everywhere. I have found cockroaches in the bathroom, in the bed, in the wardrobe and on the floor, she told Bergens Tidende.

She thinks it was because the dormitory was hot and humid and the fan was not working.

– I could not sleep, shower or cook, and spent my money eating out, she says to Dagbladet.

Limit reached

To Bergens Tidende, communications manager Marita Monsen in Sammen said that they had perceived it as if Emilie had not set other requirements than that it was cleaned up.

But there is also a limit for Emilie.

– There were more and more cockroaches, and they got bigger and bigger, and yesterday I simply could not live there anymore, she says when Dagbladet calls on Thursday morning.

That’s why she called Sammen again on Wednesday.

New, larger dormitory – for the same price

– They found a two-person dormitory for me, which I live in now, she says.

The downside is that the new and larger dormitory is 1,000 kroner more expensive a month, which is more than what Emilie had envisioned using.

– I get to ask if they can make an exception and give it to me cheaper, says Emilie.

When Dagbladet contacts Sammen on Thursday, Marita Monsen first says that she must investigate the case. Then she comes back with good news:

“We will of course give her the original rent for the new apartment”, is the clear message from Monsen.

Considering complete renovation

Monsen says that Sammen took action when Emilie resigned, and has done what they can to make her feel better.

She believes in Emilie Jakobsen Sæbø’s description of the conditions in the student residence she first moved into, but says that Sammen’s people did not find cockroaches when they arrived at the residence.

– What was also a bit unfortunate was that she had to live there this weekend, says Monsen, but explains that Sammens employees that Sæbø first contacted perceived it as if she was just asking for a clean-up.

Marita Monsen explains that Sæbø’s first dormitory was one of the few student dormitories at Fantoft that has not been completely renovated, but that it is now being considered to completely renovate these as well.

Get gift vouchers on the wound

Emilie Jakobsen Sæbø is still struggling with the aftermath.

– It is difficult to sleep, because I feel like the cockroaches are still here, she says.

Now she is still very happy, after receiving the message about the rent.

“Marita Monsen just called me and apologized to me. I will get a gift certificate and the same price for the dorm I have now as for the previous one I had. So it was fixed now “, it says in the text message she sent to Dagbladet on Thursday afternoon.
