The head of the Moscow spinal neurosurgical center GKB 67 Dmitry Dzukaev spoke about the emergence of ex-figure skater Adeline Sotnikova’s health problems, which eventually forced the first in the history of Russia and the USSR Olympic champion in women’s single skating to leave sports.
Recall that in February the 23-year-old athlete was under the control of specialists from the City Clinical Hospital No. 67 named after L.A. Vorokhobova, however, for whatever reason – was not officially reported.
Subsequently, it turned out that the skater turned to doctors because of osteochondrosis. A video even appeared on the Internet showing Sotnikova sitting on a bench in the hospital corridor with a special collar around her neck.
The doctor said that in December 2019, Sotnikova began to complain more and more about pain in the neck and right shoulder blade, and the figure’s hand was numb.
“I suggested Adeline to undergo surgery. In response, he heard: “I am participating in an ice show, I have one of the main roles. That’s about the premiere. If I agree to the operation, the performance will have to be canceled. I’ll let people down. ” In order not to interrupt rehearsals and performances, every day we put Adeline droppers with painkillers, which were enough for a couple of hours, and she returned to the ice. She spent two months in this mode, ”Dzukaev wrote in SE.
Only in early February, the athlete had a break in the work schedule, so she again went to the surgeon. The operation went without complications: Sotnikova removed two hernias, the discs between the vertebrae were replaced with implants and fastened with a titanium plate.
“Yes, in a recent interview Adeline dropped:“ The operation was done through the throat. The doctor said the scar is very sexy … ”And that was what was meant: without an extended incision, such an operation is unrealistic. Only through the front surface of the cervical spine can you get to the vertebrae. I told Adeline: “The scar must be treated calmly. As an element that will become part of the style. ” He cited the example of Gella from The Master and Margarita. The scar on the neck did not stop the heroine from remaining incredibly attractive.
And Adeline seized on this thought. On the set of the program with Elena Malysheva, where I was invited along with the skater, the host noted: the girl does not use either a scarf or a scarf, walks with her neck open, boldly showing a scar, ”the doctor admits.
By the way, Dzukaev is sure that now all the problems of the athlete are behind, and she could put on skates again.
“Theoretically, Adeline could go on the ice right now. Like the same Plushenko, who, a week after the operation on his spine, put on his skates and held the first training at his school with a bandage around his neck. But Sotnikova has nowhere to rush. Because of the coronavirus, skating rinks are closed in Moscow, all workouts are suspended. This means that you can calmly focus on rehabilitation without accelerating training. I am sure that by the time the pandemic recedes, Adeline will be in excellent physical shape, ”the specialist concluded.
Recall that the 2014 Olympic champion announced her retirement on March 2, 2020. The skater told about this on the air of the program “The Fate of a Man with Boris Korchevnikov.”
“Officially, I want to say one thing: with professional sports, that’s all. At the moment I want to be healthy and happy. It’s sad and hard for me to say this. I will also delight my fans and fans, but no longer in the professional arena … Although I miss you so much when I watch competitions, my heart breaks because I want to, but, unfortunately, my health does not allow.

Despite a short career, the skater is considered to be a significant figure in the history of domestic sports. She has four gold national championships, two silver European championships, however, the main achievement of the girl remains the victory at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
At home Games, Sotnikova left the famous Korean Yong A Kim and 15-year-old compatriot Yulia Lipnitskaya out of work, becoming the first Olympic champion in singles in Russian history.
