The Distorted Concept of Human Rights and the Rise of Power Abuse Culture

The student human rights ordinance did not cause the death of an elementary school teacher in Seocho-gu. However, doubts continue to rise as to whether the heightened awareness of human rights in society as a whole is contributing to the spread of power abuse culture. As the true meaning of ‘human rights’ is distorted and transformed into a unilateral ‘right’, I keep suspecting that rights and ‘gap-jil’ have become equal. A few years ago, while talking to her daughter, she said, “Whoa, you idiot.” She said she was emotionally abused and called domestic violence. she was surprised Calling it an idiot, technically, is emotional abuse. hmm. How else did you know that? She says she learned it during a human rights education class at school. To protect yourself, start by knowing what your rights are. Well learned. I murmured to myself, ‘You’re good, you’re good, my son.’ These days, my daughter often uses the word ‘harm’. She is in the position that others should not harm herself as much as she does not harm others. She felt that she seemed innocent, but she kept saying that she was not wrong. However, as the word ‘harm’ appeared in her relationship with her friend and her younger brother, I began to think that something was wrong with the direction. A daughter who represents her most ordinary teenager, she is growing up to be a know-it-all in her own right. However, if she does not learn ‘coexistence’ and ‘consideration’, the values that are inevitably included in the two letters ‘human rights’, her daughter will perceive human rights as the same concept as rights. It is this point that concerns me. It’s not just school. It is no exaggeration to say that the Republic of Korea is now a human rights republic. Human rights education abounds here and there. Thanks to this atmosphere, I thought that if the awareness of human rights in society as a whole increased, the lives of the socially underprivileged who were in a blind spot and were not protected human rights would improve. But society goes the other way. The public’s heightened awareness of human rights has become a weapon that grants greater power to those who have never lost human rights. Ironically, the direction the force is heading is the socially underprivileged who are in a difficult situation to defend themselves in terms of human rights. A no-kids zone is created for young people’s right to be calm, delivery drivers’ access to motorbikes is blocked for the right to be elegant in apartments, and department store employees are treated badly to enjoy the right to receive services that are paid for. And for the rights of my precious child, I harass the teacher ‘humanly’. There is no guilt in the midst of all this being done. It is because there is a justification for demanding a legitimate right. It should be ‘human rights’. It shouldn’t just be a ‘right’. Human rights (basic rights naturally possessed as human beings) inevitably include the rights of ‘you’ as well as ‘me’, but in terms of rights (powers or qualifications that can be demanded from others), the relationship is one-sided. Rights emphasizing power or qualifications have the risk of being abused. Have we been doing human rights education or have we been doing human rights education? Now is the time to discuss it seriously. Writer Ryu Seung-yeon
