When and how Titanic wreck found? Even though it has been sunk for more than a century, attention to the wreck of the Titanic has never subsided, especially with news of the disaster that befell the Titan submarine which exploded while visiting its location.

The ship, built in Belfast, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.

More than 1,500 people died in the tragedy, the deadliest cruise ship sinking in peacetime. Only 73 years later, after various efforts, his body was found dramatically.

On September 1, 1985, the wreck of the Titanic was found about 690 km off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at a depth of 3,800 meters. A joint US-French team found him led by former US naval officer Robert Ballard. He once held an unsuccessful expedition to find the Titanic in 1977.

The Titanic was eventually found with the help of a remote controlled deep-sea vehicle named Argo, equipped with sonar and cameras.

A robot named Jason is tethered to it which explores the ocean floor and takes close-up pictures. Images from the system are sent back to the control room on the tugboat and they can be assessed immediately.

After a week-long search, on Sunday September 1, 1985, the initial images of the Titanic captured by Argo appeared on the screen of the research vessel Knorr. The next day, the main body of the wreck of the Titanic was found and Argo sent back the first photographs of the ship since it sank 73 years earlier.

Ballard then made 11 dives to the site in a submarine. He revealed the ship was split in two, but much of it was surprisingly well preserved.

Oceanographers found hundreds of thousands of pieces of debris within a two-square-mile radius around the ship. There is a story that during the initial discovery of the Titanic, the crew of the Knorr started celebrating and a bottle of champagne was opened. But Ballard then felt embarrassed.

“We felt ashamed that we had celebrated. Suddenly we realized that we shouldn’t be dancing on someone’s grave,” he was quoted as saying detikINET from Yahoo News.

Ballard voiced opposition to trying to salvage the artifacts from the ship. “There is no light in these depths and very little life to be found. This is a quiet and peaceful place, a fitting location for the remains of this greatest marine tragedy to rest. Forever may it stay that way,” he said.

The wreck of the Titanic was deemed too fragile to be lifted and protected under UNESCO conventions.
