The Diplomatic Blunder: Kiril Petkov’s Failed Prime Minister Denkov’s Visit to Austria

Kiril Petkov failed Prime Minister Denkov’s visit to Austria on October 4, reports Epicenter. bg.

Late last night, the government information service reported that the visit of Prime Minister Academician Nikolay Denkov to Vienna, scheduled for October 4, when he was supposed to meet with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, has been postponed. The reason – due to the illness of Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The new date set for Denkov’s reception in Vienna is October 24.

According to the media, it is a matter of “diplomatic flu” of the hosts, caused by a huge diplomatic and foreign policy blunder of PP-DB co-chairman Kiril Petkov.

In his capacity as chairman of the parliamentary committee on European Union, Schengen Area and Eurozone issues, last week Petkov traveled to Vienna on his own, ostensibly to discuss at a high level the Austrian veto on our Schengen admission. No one sent him and he did not consult with anyone about his visit, but as the head of a committee he has the right to show initiative.

In Vienna, however, Petkov behaved so inappropriately that he literally infuriated the Austrians, and Chancellor Karl Nehamer immediately “got sick” with the flu, and thus Prime Minister Denkov’s visit on Wednesday was a failure, our diplomats revealed to Epicenter.bg.

On Friday, when everyone was wondering where Kiril Petkov was, PP posted a video on Facebook in which he was filmed against the background of a hall with columns with golden capitals. Petkov announced that he was in the Austrian Parliament, that he had “meetings with MPs from the ruling parties and the opposition parties”, that Bulgaria is not allowed in Schengen because of the services, and already on Monday the PG of the PP-DB will introduce the bills for the reform of the security services

Petkov made the suggestion that the demands of deputies from the ruling parties and the opposition parties in Vienna are precisely the bills for the reform of the services in our country in the context of security with a view to Bulgaria’s acceptance into Schengen. “And the most important thing for Schengen is the topic of ‘Security’ – security of the borders, information security, security of the entire Schengen area,” Petkov explained in his typical enthusiastically unbreakable style.

We remind you that until months ago Kiril Petkov stated that the reason why Bulgaria was not accepted was that no reforms were made in the justice system. Then, according to him, this is the main reason why our country is being vetoed.

Today, in the company of gen. Atanas Atanasov, Petkov announced that they introduced the changes to the laws on the reform of the services as a requirement for our acceptance into Schengen, because “the most important thing for Schengen is the topic of security”. However, from the submitted texts it can be seen that the reform is almost entirely exhausted by the change of the current chiefs of services and the change of the model in which they are appointed. From which it appears that in Vienna they are interfering in the way of appointing the chiefs of services in our country, which is not true at all.

The behavior of Kiril Petkov literally infuriated the Austrian chancellery and from there they preferred to temporarily postpone the visit of Prime Minister Denkov until the authorities in Bulgaria understand what they mean by requirements for membership in the Schengen zone.

The gross abuse by Kiril Petkov and the interference of the authorities in Austria with his efforts to control the offices through the head of the president is not in sync with European diplomacy, diplomats explained.

Today, motivating the introduction of the bill for reforming the services, Kiril Petkov boasted that at the end of last week he held meetings in Austria with representatives of parliamentary parties, as well as with their foreign minister. The topic was Schengen. And again he made a diplomatic blunder.

“What they said is that the biggest issue in relation to their veto is the security of migration flows, border security, information security,” explained Petkov. After that, he connected these talks with Schengen, explaining that our entry into Schengen and the reform of the Bulgarian services “go hand in hand”.

This is categorically not true and is considered an unacceptable interference of the authorities in Austria in the internal political games of the PP-DB, foreign policy experts told “Epicenter”.

From the Austrian side, there is no information with whom Kiril Petkov met and what he talked about. The only sign after his “walk” around the Austrian Parliament is the news that Vienna is postponing Prime Minister Denkov’s visit.

We remind you that the leader of GERB, Boyko Borisov, stated that a reform in the services is necessary, but not when a war is being fought a few hundred kilometers from us. Borisov called for the reform to be done carefully and thoughtfully, as well as in a peaceful environment, and not in time of war.
