The Digital Habits of Portuguese Consumers and the Impact of Technology: Insights from Deloitte Study

Most Portuguese people currently have access to the digital and online world through mobile communication devices, such as smartphones or laptops. According to a new study carried out by Deloitte, the penetration rate of the latest generation mobile phones among consumers between 18 and 65 years old is 94% in the national territory, with 87% of these Portuguese also having access to a laptop.

However, the findings also reveal that, despite the widespread use of technological devices, half of national consumers say they would like to spend less time looking at screens. This desire is especially pronounced among consumers between 18 and 44 years of age.

Even so, more than half of respondents (52%) stay up later than planned due to being in front of a device and use their smartphone as soon as they wake up (63%), both trends being more noticeable among the Portuguese aged between 18 and 24 years old.

Social interactions from mobile devices are also evident in the “Digital Consumer Trends”, with 78% of Portuguese people claiming to use social networks and messaging services on a daily basis. In addition, 80% of respondents have at least one device connected to the internet at home. The most common are smart TVs (58%), game consoles (39%) and video streaming devices that connect to the TV (24%).

“We are reaching a plateau in the use of devices: after the sharp growth in the period of the pandemic, the adoption of new devices has slowed down. We could argue that this is due to the fact that most Portuguese already have cell phones or access to laptops, but the truth is that their use has dropped. Reinforcing this trend is the growing desire to turn off devices and spend less time in front of a screen, especially among younger generations. Do not confuse, however, these data with the increasing impact of technology and the virtual world in our lives, and the existing potential in innovations such as the metaverse or the NTFs», comments, in a statement, Francisco Cal, associate partner of Deloitte .
