The number of people killed in the weekend earthquake in Haiti has exceeded 1,400, the Haitian Civil Protection Authority said on Monday.
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake, which occurred on Saturday, killed 1,419 people and injured 6,900, according to the Civil Protection Administration. The earthquake also destroyed more than 37,000 homes.
Rescuers and volunteers continued to search the ruins of the buildings on Monday to find survivors.
Hospitals are overcrowded with earthquake victims at a time when tropical storm Grace is approaching Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic, which could cause floods and landslides.
In January 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti killed more than 200,000 people and caused severe damage. More than one and a half million Haitians lost their homes in the earthquake, which also destroyed 60% of the health care system.
