The White House considers it appalling even the suggestion that American volunteers captured by Russia could face the death penalty.

“It’s appalling that a government official in Russia could even suggest the death penalty for American citizens … in Ukraine,” said John Kirby, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications.
Earlier, the Kremlin said that the captured Americans are not related to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the Geneva Convention does not apply to them. The decision on their fate will be made by the court.
