The Daughters of Doctor March: A modern and successful reinterpretation of a classic, our critic

What better way to start 2020 than to go to the cinema to find out the new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, The Four Daughters of Doctor March ? Some may have the impression of already knowing the story by heart and others, thanks to this new film, will have the chance to discover it for the first time. Renamed for the occasion Daughters of Doctor March, the film immerses us in the history of a family during the American Civil War, who struggles to find its marks when the father left for the front and his wife and 4 daughters stayed behind and dreamed of the future . The plot therefore focuses on the four young women Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth, all different, but all determined.

What we like with this film directed by Greta Gerwigis that history manages to be reinvented thanks to the use of a double timeline. The plot advances over two periods and thanks to flashbacks, unlike all the versions that we have seen so far. If the plot does not take place in our time, the characters always resonate with as much accuracy because even today, young women have to fight to defend their desires and their opinions in front of a world which wants to dictate their conduct to them. The dialogue is open between the sisters who do not have the same desires in life and everything is done without giving lessons.

Thanks to this new film, we also learn to rediscover the characters and if Meg and Beth remain relatively discreet, It is a pleasure to see Jo March revive in the guise of Saoirse Ronan who, once is not customary, delivers an exceptional performance in the skin of a young woman far ahead of her time who dreams only of write and be independent. It is also the only version that allows spectators to better understand the character of Amy, played here by the talented Florence Pugh, who for once is not described as a small egocentric plague. This version of the young woman is much more human, more touching and she almost steals the show from Jo who has always been at the center of history. In addition, in this period of cold and holidays, taking refuge with the March a warm house full of love, it’s perfect!
