The Damaging Effects Of Electric Cigarettes on Respiratory Health, Explained by a Pediatric Pulmonologist in Jakarta

Jakarta

Some people think that the effects of electric cigarettes are lighter than conventional cigarettes. Even though it’s the same as burning cigarettes, electric cigarettes can also have bad effects on health, including in children who join in using them.

Respirology pulmonology sub-specialist pediatrician, Dr. Dimas Dwi Saputro, spA, explained that the use of electric cigarettes can trigger disorders of the upper, lower respiratory tract, and even the lungs.

“All of our respiratory organs can be affected by electric cigarettes. In the upper respiratory tract, cigarette smoke can interfere with the response of parts of the nasal passages that function to block all germs that enter the airways,” explained Dr. Dimas in an IDAI online discussion, Saturday (27/5/2023).

In addition, cigarette smoke that enters the trachea and airways can trigger excessive mucus or phlegm production, which is more dry or sticky.

“The mucus that is formed will be drier and stickier, so that coughing will appear, it will appear like bronchitis, and it is difficult to recover. Even though his child is like an ordinary cold cough,” said Dr. Dimas.

“If it goes deeper, it can trigger inflammation so that asthma occurs or narrowing of the small pipes to the lungs. This can trigger wheezing or wheezing,” he continued.

Disturbing the Body’s Immune System

dr Dimas explained that electric cigarettes have particles formed from cigarette aerosols that are very small in size, which is under 1 micron. This makes it easier for the particles to enter the alveoli, which are the places where gases meet in the human body.

“If it is disturbed, then gas exchange is disrupted. And this aerosol is a foreign object and will be captured by macrophages, it makes the immune system imperfect and makes other viruses enter the body,” he explained.

“Because the macrophages catch the particles, their function will not be optimal so that it becomes easier for infection. So, if a child has a common cold, it can get worse and can reach the lower respiratory tract to the lungs and even pneumonia,” concluded Dr. Dimas.
