The German broadcasting organization “Deutsche Welle” refers to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and reports that the earthquake could reduce Turkey’s gross domestic product by 1%. The biggest problems have arisen in the agricultural and light industrial sectors, but the losses will be partly compensated by the reconstruction works.
The UN, on the other hand, stated that about 5.2 million people need help in Turkey, and the figure has been agreed with the authorities. Two days ago, the organization also called for $400 million in donations for some five million people in rebel-held northwest Syria.
NATO is also preparing to provide assistance, and its head, Jens Stoltenberg, has personally familiarized himself with the situation in Turkey. He flew over the devastated Hatay province and promised to provide temporary housing for thousands of displaced people. The alliance could supply tents and other aid.
CONTEXT:
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred on the night of February 6 in southeastern Turkey and neighboring Syria. The number of victims of the earthquake has exceeded 40,000.
There is also growing talk about the fact that buildings in Turkey are too often built in violation of regulations. Since earthquakes occur quite often in Turkey, all buildings must be extremely resistant. However, the collapse of around 6,000 houses shows construction irregularities.
Part of the blame also lies with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose party has been in power for 20 years. The Turkish president has admitted that his government is unable to provide aid to victims as quickly as people would like.
