The curious story of youtuber divers who help solve cases of missing persons

Adventures With Purpose (AWP) is a YouTube channel that originally documented the work of a dive team. Jared Leisek, a diver originally from Redmond (USA), started this project with the aim of removing the garbage that accumulated in many lakes and rivers to keep the water clean.

But when they entered the depths together with the rest of the members of their group, they began to discover elements of the past by mere chance. What they found the most were old vehicles. Leisek claims to have recovered at least a hundred cars that were submerged in just four years.

They currently have close to two million subscribers on the YouTube channel and have helped solve 19 unsolved cases in the US.

In this way, they realized that their work as divers could go beyond cleaning the waters. When these types of elements were found, their mission changed course and they began to solve pending cases of people who had disappeared, which has led them to fame. They currently have close to two million subscribers on the YouTube channel and have helped solve 19 unsolved cases in the United States.

This was the case for Margaret “Jan” Shupe Smith, who disappeared last year in Florida. Her family was baffled and a year later they contacted AWP because the missing woman was a big fan of the videos they posted. Margaret was last seen in a moss green Kia Soul, when she was on her way to pick up her daughter from her work.

AWP agreed to take the case and traveled south to dive into the waters in search of Margaret’s car. During this expedition they came across two vehicles, but neither matched the description of the missing woman. However, just before giving up the search for her, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office provided them with a lead: Margaret had been in a minor car accident in a different area.

So they went to the place indicated by the police and, only eighteen inches deep, they found the car they were looking for. The license plate matched, and when the car was pulled out of the water, the remains of a woman about Margaret’s age were found. This is one more case that AWP has resolved, thus helping families to close that stage of uncertainty and allowing them to begin the grieving process.

AWP members are very grateful to their fans because if it wasn’t for all they share, many people wouldn’t know about their services and they wouldn’t have been able to help so many families find peace after accidents like these.
