The curfew disrupts the culture of runners in Puerto Rico

Executive order 2020-023 signed by the governor Wanda Vázquez Garced to control the spread of the new strain of coronavirus COVID-19 It will alter all the lines of the daily life of Puerto Ricans.

Runners and people who usually exercise in parks and gyms are not exempt, since they will not be able to exercise as usual because the ordinance imposes a 9:00 p.m. curfew. at 5:00 a.m., and restricts the reasons why a citizen can walk or transit on public roads outside those hours.

In the same way, it orders the closing of gyms until March 30.

Given this scenario and recognizing that exercising is important to maintain physical and mental health, coaches Sigfredo “Freddy” Rodríguez and Chewi Candelario shared several recommendations to continue with their exercise routines and not lose their physical condition.

One of the first suggestions is that if you have a treadmill or stationary bike in your home, use them.

“If you have a treadmill at home or in triathlete cases that have a bicycle at home, then you have no need to go on the street. Climb on the treadmill or bike, and if you already have your training, do it at home, ”said Candelario, who opted to use technology to send routines to his clients.

“The call to everyone is not to gather, but to do their individual training. There should be no call to stop exercising because that population – which is a healthy one – cannot take that away from them. Also, exercising helps release tension, and this is a very stressful situation. ”added Candelario of Chewi Runners.

For his part, Rodríguez advised exercises such as push-ups, squats or looking for routines that can be performed at home.

Rodríguez brought up that the world situation with the new coronavirus strain has affected runners from his club, the Freddy’s Runners, who have seen how four large marathons will be carried out almost consecutively by the date changes. These are Boston, Berlin, London, and Chicago.

The new dates put Boston moving on September 14, Berlin on September 27, London on October 4, Chicago on October 11, and New York on November 1.

“I have some runners who will try to make Berlin and London. In this bad situation, the good thing is that these two marathons are flat. If it were Boston and New York (bullfights), which are very difficult marathons, it is half suicidal. Another thing is that admission to these races is difficult, and when you get caught you have to rip his hand off. Postponing it for another year is difficult because they will catch you, ”said the coach, who said that the people who had been accepted for the Japanese marathon lost the money when it was canceled for those who were not elite.

Novel situation

Both coaches shared that it is the first time that they are in a situation like this, in which training in a group or going outside to run is not possible, since after the passage of hurricanes Irma and María in September 2017 and the tremors earlier this year continued to train.

“Under Maria we keep running. We were under the law, not now. For Maria we made alternate routes because there were routes that were full of obstacles. On the day of the shaking we ran, some ran in the afternoon. This is necessary (exercise) to stay mentally and physically healthy. ”Rodríguez outlined.

“When the hurricanes hit, we would drop the hours in the afternoon because there was no light. So we started training at five in the afternoon. We also changed the training routes because the streets were messed up. We take our measurements, but we keep meeting. Now it is different, but my exhortation is that they continue doing exercises because if they are not going to go crazy in the house, ”reiterated – for his part – Candelario.
