The origins of the culottes date back to 1911, when Paul Poiret popularized the culottes to facilitate the life and movements of the most emancipated women of his time, who rode bicycles. In the 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli opened her fashion house in Paris, creating innovative, practical and comfortable clothes, such as the culottes created for the Spanish tennis champion Lilí Álvarez, who wore it for the first time in 1931 at a Wimbledon tournament . That model was then developed for riding and on two wheels.
The trouser skirt, however, was not unanimous, many women continued to prefer more traditional dresses, straight or one-piece. Only in the 1960s was it truly (re)discovered and, as Mary Quant’s miniskirt, it is part of that history of fashion that has allowed women greater freedom of movement and the opportunity to free themselves from conventions. Between ups and downs and many interpretations by stylists, for a few years she has returned to the collections of various brands.
