The cry of pain from Elena and Diego’s mother: “The boys don’t wake up, what did you do to him?”

“What did he do to him …”: Daniela Fumagalli repeats it several times crying. Andrea Figoni who listened to her at the Carabinieri station of Casargo is in a short break from the long conversation with the prosecutor of Lecco. A few hundred meters away, her husband Mario Bressi killed their 12-year-old sons, the twins Elena and Diego, and then committed suicide. The 45-year-old woman, manager of a sports club in her city, leaves the barracks for a moment to embrace the friends who came to support her and who will then take her away in a car with tinted windows. It is with them that she lets herself go, desperate, and repeats: “What has she done to him …”.

It was her turn to find the children early yesterday morning in the double bed of the holiday home in Margno, in Valsassina. A neighbor saw her arrive together with the carabinieri, whom she advised before getting into the car from Gorgonzola with her sister. From the message that her husband had sent her, she had no doubt that something terrible had happened. The twins had been killed a few hours earlier and she was unable to do anything: “They don’t wake up,” he repeated. Although they had talked to Bressi about separation and contacted a lawyer, Daniela Fumagalli had had nothing against it when her husband had told her about the short vacation only with the children. He wanted to try to take care of it, he explained, in view of the many similar occasions after the separation.

From what is reported in investigative circles, there are no traces of violent quarrels in the couple nor of complaints. The process of separation was at the beginning, no formal initiative had yet been taken and the spouses still lived together with Gessate, not far from Milan. The situation, although painful, had not seemed conflicting. Instead, even if nobody understood him, Mario Bressi harbored a deep and secret anger. He did not accept the decision that was probably his wife’s and that she had recently communicated to him. On Friday evening, a few hours before the killings, the two hadn’t argued on the phone. But the man has sent several messages and some emails too. The investigator deduces a first and partial reason for the crime. The 45-year-old wanted to punish his wife, take revenge for abandonment, taking away the greatest good. Also for this reason, the man’s computer and telephone will be analyzed in search of other messages and notes useful to understand more and to establish whether he has been preparing the infanticides for some time.

«I contacted the mother, she is in shock, she looks like a wounded beast – says Don Bruno Maggioni, pastor of the pastoral area of Margno – It is as if she cried out the pain, she is exasperated. I know he received medical comfort, but that’s not enough. It is understandable that the country is also in shock: we are 300 inhabitants, we all know each other and we love each other. As a parish priest, I have a duty now to be close to everyone. I know the grandparents of these creatures, they have been here on vacation for 40 years. Daddy may have come a few times but I know him in passing. “
