In Russia, the area covered by forest fires has almost doubled in a week

Last Saturday, June 20, fires in hard-to-reach areas had covered 251,000 hectares of forest, but now the area has grown to 1.15 million hectares.

Forests burn in many places in Russia, from Karelia in the west to Kamchatka in the east, but most in the Sahrawi republic, where fires have covered 929,000 hectares of taiga. An emergency situation has been declared in several regions due to forest fires or high fire risk.

In many places, fires are caused by strong thunderstorms, but elsewhere hot and dry weather contributes to burning.

In the Sakha Republic, Verkhoyansk, known as the world’s cold pole, where the lowest winter temperature is minus 67.8 degrees Celsius, another record was recorded a week ago – plus 38 degrees, but the information has yet to be verified by the UN World Meteorological Organization.
