The Crazy Comedy that has Entertained People for Over 50 Years: The Making of a Filmmaking Art by Oldřich Lipský

Making a crazy comedy that will not stop entertaining people even after 50 years is a great filmmaking art, and the proven comedy director Oldřich Lipský managed to do that. When writing, Miloš Macourek was inspired by Nenad Brixi’s humorous novel, and then it was enough to mix the cast correctly.

Perhaps the good reputation of the director made two comedic actresses, “Bohdalka” and “Janžurka”, compete with each other to accept the roles. Few directors could boast that the two queens of comedy films met in front of his camera. It was, for example, Zdeněk Podskalský when he was filming Saints.

The casting of Radoslav Brzobohatý was also in play

High school teacher George Camel was played by the director’s brother, Lubomír Lipský, but he was only a substitute. Radoslav Brzobohatý was to become the star of the film. However, in the same period, he also filmed the drama Ucho and the detective film Pěnička a Paraplíčko with Jiřina Bohdalová, and so the director’s brother Lubomír took his turn. This was definitely a great choice as it is the role of a lifetime for this acting legend.

The inconspicuous teacher thoroughly tormented his landlady, Harrington

There wasn’t an actor or actress in the film who didn’t leave some movie message in the viewers’ memory. Just like the inconspicuous teacher, the unforgettable Marie Rosůlková sparkled in the film in a small but very prominent role. The would-be landlady Camela suspected that he had decided to kill or evict all her tenants from the boarding house she ran. George Camel accidentally got involved in a war between two gangster gangs from Michigan and San Bonigo, and it was over. There was a check for a million dollars at stake, and the poor teller couldn’t clean up the corpses. He opened the door and a corpse fell out.

It didn’t take long for him to develop a reputation as a global celebrity (the Springtown Beast), which gave him the opportunity to flirt with journalist Sabrina (Jiřina Bohdalová), who had been ignoring him for a long time. She too got the feeling that her boyfriend’s murder was directly related to her and that she was doing it to have something to write about. Of course, Sabrina was going to feed off of Camel’s popularity and kept an eye on him. This brought her into conflict with the head of one of the criminal gangs, Kate Draxlerová (Iva Janžurová).

The icing on the cake is the work of Kája Saudek

He was able to give the film an unusual face with his comic drawings. Saudek had already collaborated several years before with director Vorlíček on a film Who wants to kill Jessie where he met screenwriter Miroslav Macourek, with whom he immediately got along. Macourek thus got the idea to repeat the drawings in the film, already when he was working with Lipský on the script.

The film can be seen on 5/10 on Prima Max at 20:00 and 7/10 on Prima at 14:20.
