In most children who get COVID-19, the symptoms that appear are low-grade fever, cough, runny nose and stomach problems. Some even complain of body aches, headaches, diarrhea and vomiting.
“There have been cases that have progressed to pneumonia, and require oxygen and other respiratory assistance,” said Dr Dhiren Gupta, senior consultant pediatrician at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.
Some children also report more severe complications such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) – a rare inflammatory condition with persistent fever. Usually occurs 2-4 weeks after the onset of COVID-19.
“Case tsunami COVID-19 this severity has overwhelmed the health care infrastructure in the state, “said Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of the Mumbai Covid task force.
“This time we saw younger people between 20 and 40 being seriously affected and even children are now being hospitalized with severe symptoms. The capacity of the health care system to survive is shrinking,” he said later.
