The Cost of Switching to KPN’s Fiber Optic Network: Is It Worth It?

Do you now have a DSL internet subscription from, for example, Youfone or Odido and is KPN installing fiber optic cable for you? Then it will probably cost you a lot more soon. The cheaper internet subscriptions are not available on KPN’s fiber optic network.

In the past, we used the telephone line to make calls, but now we also use it to use the internet. We also do this via TV cable, for example. But the telephone network (also called copper network) is outdated and costs a lot to maintain. That is why fiber optic networks are being installed everywhere in the Netherlands. These are much faster and cheaper to maintain and will replace the telephone line.

But many people without fiber optic still use the internet via DSL via that old telephone line. In places where KPN has installed its fiber optic network, the old-fashioned telephone line will be replaced after completion switched off. This means that all users of that copper line must switch to another network. This could be KPN’s fiber optic network, but also Ziggo’s television cable, for example.

For people with a DSL internet subscription from, for example, Youfone, Online.nl, Budget Thuis and Odido, such a mandatory switch is not beneficial in various situations. You can already have an internet subscription via DSL for 32 euros per month. As a new customer you even get a discount for a few months.

You will spend at least 42 euros per month on KPN’s fiber optic network. This means that you will pay up to 30 percent more.

KPN has an open fiber optic network

According to a company spokesperson, KPN has an open fiber optic network. “This means that other providers are welcome to use our network.” Various providers, including Online.nl, Youfone, Budget Thuis and Solcon, offer services via KPN’s fiber optic network.

But other providers are hardly cheaper than KPN itself, calculated Marit Veldkamp of the comparison site internetten.nl. According to her, KPN costs at least 42.50 euros per month for a 100 megabit internet subscription via its fiber optic network. Online.nl is 50 cents cheaper, but the speed is halved to 50 megabits.

“Other parties sell their services on our telephone network at competitive rates,” says the KPN spokesperson. The rates for the new fiber optic network are higher than the rates for the copper network. According to the provider, this is due to the high costs the company incurs for the installation of the fiber optic network.

In addition, according to the KPN spokesperson, it is not entirely fair to compare an internet connection via DSL with internet via fiber optic. “Much higher speeds are achievable on fiber optic, it is more stable, uses less energy and it is future-proof. The current copper network is at the end of its life and is therefore now cheaper.”
