The “corregrinos” of “A Santiago contra el Cáncer” are already running through León | Radio Leon

The tenth edition of “A Santiago contra el Cáncer” is already underway after the departure from the Plaza de la Catedral. The solidarity relay race will be held entirely by the center of León to adapt to health restrictions with the aim, as it has been doing since its premiere in 2011, of continuing to raise money for the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) of León. During the next few days and uninterruptedly the supportive runners will give numerous laps to the historic center.

To emulate the distance that separates Saint Jean Pied from Port de Finisterre, the route devised, This edition will take place along an urban circuit of 3,850 m that runs through the Humid and Romantic neighborhoods to which the relievers will turn for more than 90 hours until completing the 225 laps that are equivalent to the 887 km that the corregrinos should have traveled between France and Finisterre. In addition, the 225 laps will have another symbol added since in them the kilometers that they will travel on the Camino de Santiago when passing through the capital of León will be exactly the same that separate the cathedrals of León and Santiago de Compostela.

Athletes and authorities met at the starting point / A Santiago contra el Cáncer

The Councilor for Sports of the City of León, Vicente Canuria, and the provincial deputy, José Pellitero, gave the starting signal to a non-competitive relay race that in its nine editions it exceeded 250,000 euros between donations and contributions destined to the coffers of the AECC in a complicated year for the association, which has not been able to carry out most of the solidarity initiatives with which it collects the money necessary for its care and research work. In the 2019 edition, donations to the AECC were close to € 50,000.

The race will be held for the most part running, although every day there will be two walkers’ relays, one for Nordic walking and another at 6:00 p.m. that will serve the AECC to value its action programs, from the work of prevention to volunteering, through research and psychological and social support in what will be the central act of each of the four days of a race to which the organizers invite all Leonese to participate “because the fight against cancer is everyone’s job and all that is contributed is little. This is a completely solidarity race“. The León City Council and the local companies Patatas Hijolusa, Martínez Bierzo and Cerlesa support this event. Donations can be made directly to the account of La Caixa ES03 2100 1598 8802 0000 5195 and for small donations there will be a piggy bank in the Plaza de the Cathedral and commemorative bracelets from this tenth edition will be sold for two euros, the proceeds of which will also be donated entirely to the AECC.
