The cops who beg for dignified attention

Police officer Holman Rodríguez has had a shattered leg for three years, since an accident he suffered in 2019.

Holman has a nearly 20-year career in the National Civil Police (PNC). Originally from Chalchuapa, Santa Ana, he demands decent health care due to the situation he is experiencing. After three years wandering in different hospitals of the Salvadoran Social Security Institute (ISSS), he makes a public complaint demanding care that he has not received.

In addition to this, the PNC Police Welfare Division, created in 2009 to provide necessary assistance on comprehensive health care, legal advice, and burial assistance to police officers and their families, does not support it either.

According to Holman, these two institutions have failed him. “From Police Welfare, just the name. Until now there is a lawyer who is doing the steps because my case has come to light,” Holman reported. But there have been no further advances. This division of the PNC did not solve the problem of the agent, who could soon lose his leg.

“What happens is that this area has been neglected, dehumanizing the police worker. He is only seen as a machine that has to work, but they have forgotten that he is a human being ”.

Marvin reyes, representative of the MTP.

Another police officer affected by not receiving help is the agent Manuel Anzora, who according to his colleagues is going through a difficult situation with his daughter (just turned 18) and who has already suffered a leg amputation. She suffers from diabetes, and her condition is not improving. This policeman has also not obtained support for his daughter’s medical expenses.

The need for agents Holman and Anzora is so great that their fellow police officers made a public call for help from the population. Yesterday, at the end of the day, many people came to donate money, food and wheelchairs.

Marvin Reyes, representative of the Police Workers Movement (MTP), was one of the volunteers in charge of the collection and regrets that Social Welfare does not help as it should be. He also questions that the police are not given the attention they deserve.

“What happens is that this area has been neglected, dehumanizing the police worker. He is only seen as a machine that has to work, but they have forgotten that he is a human being and that he has an infinite number of problems. to the human being who wears the uniform, “Reyes said.

The activity was supported by the Samaritanos de los Pobres Foundation, which donated a wheelchair. Rigoberto Espinoza, representative of the Foundation, said that it is necessary for the authorities to help with the needs of the security agents, since the work they carry out is important. “They should help their own people who are serving them at the national level,” he clarified.

Although he can hardly use one leg, this has not been an impediment to work for Holman; And although he cannot walk, he makes the effort to work in a sub-delegation near where he lives, only now he is in charge of administrative tasks. “I always make myself available to my colleagues so they can see that despite the situation I have, I will help them as much as I can,” Holman clarifies.

Regarding the situation with his leg, agent Holman said that since he did not obtain medical help from the public sector, he will have to pay for his operation in a private place and it will cost $ 7 thousand. Doctors have warned him that if he doesn’t have surgery soon, he will lose that limb.

The situation of the daughter of agent Anzora is similar: if her diabetes is not given adequate treatment and she does not have adequate medical control, her leg will be amputated again.
