The conversation between a terracotta warrior and the Statue of Liberty. China’s (unusual) response to US criticism

Using dolls similar to those of Lego, China created a video in which it criticizes the United States. In a dialogue between a terracotta warrior and the Statue of Liberty, several topics are covered, from the construction of field hospitals to the allegedly hidden information.

In this video published by the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, entitled “Once Upon a Virus”, figures similar to Lego dolls develop a dialogue, with strong criticism from China to the United States: the Chinese side – represented by a terracotta warrior with a mask – accuses the Americans – represented by the Statue of Liberty – of having a slow response to the pandemic of the new coronavirus.

The video follows a chronology, from December to the present, and goes through some of the most talked about points between the two powers, among them:

China: Strange cases of pneumonia reported
USA: So?
China: It’s dangerous
USA: It’s just a flu
China: Wearing a mask
USA: Do not wear a mask
China: Staying at home
USA: This violates human rights
China: Build temporary hospitals
USA: They are concentration camps
China: They were built in ten days
USA: Just show up !!

The video, published on April 29, already has over one million views. For almost two minutes, the US dismisses all warnings from China, but then criticizes the Asian giant for not warning earlier about covid-19. The terracotta warrior ceases to be alone on the scene and several health professionals appear, with protective equipment.

USA: You lied
China: Our data is public
USA: You keep everything secret

At that point in the video, the Statue of Liberty appears ill, with a different colored face and already wearing a mask, being given serum or medication.

China: Your people are now dying
USA: You didn’t warn us
China: We said it was dangerous
USA: You lied!

After several contradictions about the pandemic, the video ends with the Statue saying “We are always correct, even when we contradict ourselves”, to which the Chinese warrior replies “It is what I like most about you, Americans: your consistency”.

According to the Quartz, the video “is effective because, like any good piece of advertising, it mixes elements of the truth with excessive simplifications, exaggerations and lack of context”.

Lego has already responded to the video in response to the Business Insider, saying it has nothing to do with the publication. “We did not participate in the animation in any way. As a toy company, we are focusing on bringing games to children and families,” said a spokesman for the brand. It is also said that Lego requested justification from the Chinese state agency, but so far has not seen its questions answered.

At the end of December 2019, in Wuhan, a city in central China, the disease that is now in the mouths of the world was emerging.

The new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, will have appeared in a live animal market. Although the origin of the virus remains unclear, there are several accusations that China is targeting.

At first, the USA accused China of having falsified data on the severity of the new coronavirus: US intelligence services also estimate that the number of deaths and infections reported by Beijing are false, intentionally below the reality of the pandemic in that country.

Yesterday, the head of American diplomacy, Mike Pompeo, said that there is “a significant amount of evidence” that the new coronavirus comes from a laboratory in the Chinese city of Wuhan, place of origin of the pandemic.

This version, however, has been refuted by the World Health Organization (WHO), which says that the virus is of “natural origin”.

However, doubts persist and are already several countries that require an investigation not only to the origin of the virus – what Beijing refuses – such as WHO’s performance during the pandemic. The organization has been accused by the U.S. of being favorable to Beijing, to the point that Trump has suspended funding for the organization.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 245,000 deaths and infected more than 3.4 million people in 195 countries and territories.

More than a million patients were considered cured.

In Portugal, 1,043 people died of the 25,282 confirmed as infected, and there are 1,689 recovered cases, according to the Directorate-General for Health.

To combat the pandemic, governments sent 4.5 billion people home (more than half the world’s population), ended non-essential trade and drastically reduced air traffic, paralyzing entire sectors of the world economy.

Faced with a decrease in new patients in intensive care and contagion, some countries have started to develop plans to reduce confinement and in some cases to alleviate various measures.
