The Controversy Surrounding Karim Benzema’s Tweet and the Response of French Politicians

Former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe deplored Sunday on RTL “the hyper speed with which political leaders believe it is appropriate to express themselves”, in allusion to the controversy triggered by a position taken by footballer Karim Benzema, and fueled by the Minister of the Interior.

“What strikes me deep down is the hyper speed with which political leaders (…) believe it is appropriate to express themselves,” declared the head of the Horizons party, emphasizing that “political leaders speak too often and often too quickly.

“But our society is like that: a society of hyper emotionality and hyper reactivity,” he argued.
The current mayor of Le Havre was questioned about a publication on spare neither women nor children.

“Can we agree on the fact that the quality of public debate does not necessarily depend on the reaction that I may or may not have to a tweet from a football player,” asked Mr. Philip.

Karim Benzema’s message, however, sparked an indignant reaction from Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who accused him of being “in notorious links with the Muslim Brotherhood”, an Islamist organization. Comments that Mr. Darmanin had said he would withdraw, if the 2022 Ballon d’Or “tweeted” to “also mourn” the assassination of the French teacher from Arras by a radicalized young person.

Close to Mr. Darmanin, Mr. Philippe stressed that “the Minister of the Interior was expected to prepare the country and guarantee security in an extremely dangerous and extremely tense society.”

“It’s an extremely difficult job. And Gérald does it well and I have confidence in him. And this is what the Minister of the Interior must dedicate himself to,” commented Mr. Philippe.
