The Controversial Transfer of Pablo Escobar’s Hippos to Mexico’s Ostok Sanctuary

Bogata (Colombia) ∙ 10 hippos raised by drug lord Pablo Escobar will be shipped to Mexico. Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán is being transported to Sinaloa, where he lives. From there Jesus will be transferred to Mary. The hippos will now be housed at Ostok Sanctuary, an animal sanctuary. The hippos are shifted at a cost of around Rs 4 crore.

In the 1980s, Escobar began breeding hippos imported from Africa in his own zoo. Escobar brought three female hippos and one male hippo, but after the drug kingpin’s death in 1993, they became extinct. There are currently 160 hippos.

The authorities have moved around 200 animals, including elephants and giraffes, from Exobar’s zoo to other facilities, but the hippos have been left there. The science journal Nature has warned that the number of these will exceed 1500 within 2 decades if it continues at this level. In the meantime, sterilization was also tried, but to no avail. Colombia then decided to ship hippos to India and Mexico.
