The commission for the return of oppositionists to Belarus has received 23 applications since the beginning of February

The commission to consider the applications of opposition supporters who left Belarus and wanted to return to the country received 23 applications. Commission meetings have not yet been held. This was announced by Deputy Prosecutor General of Belarus Alexei Stuk.

“Now the commission is considering 23 applications. Most of them do not meet the criteria prescribed in the decree, the directions and the information that must be provided,” said Alexei Stuk on the air of the TV channel STV. According to him, the authors of inappropriate applications are asked to provide the necessary information.

“The material necessary for discussing one or another statement, an appeal from one or another candidate who wrote it has not yet been accumulated,” Mr. Stuk added.

In early February, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on the creation of a commission for the return of oppositionists who had left the country. The commission will look into whether the people who applied have committed any wrongdoing during the protests following the 2020 presidential election. The press service of Mr. Lukashenko explained that those who committed offenses would have to “publicly apologize” and compensate for the harm done.
