But now we are there: after a long gestation, which led to the new tariffs with vertigo-inducing upward adjustments in the black mark days, the service Cinque Terre Express is about to resume: the ‘light metro’ that connects La Spezia to Levanto, passing through the most famous villages of the Ligurian East will be active from 16 March to 3 November and the discontent shows no signs of abating, on the contrary. Both for single tickets and for the “Cinque Terre Card” trains, service packages in which rail mobility plays the lion’s share, the tariffs determined by the adaptation of the service contract for public transport between the Liguria Region and Trenitalia will be regulated according to three different price bands: C (red), high turnout, expected on all long weekends and spring weekends and from 29 June to 25 August continuously, as well as on weekends in September; B (yellow), medium turnout; A (green), low turnout. These are the costs of the single journey for each route, respectively: 10, 8 and 5 euros; of the one-day train card: 32.5, 27 and 19.50 euros; of the two-day train card: 59, 48.5 and 34 euros; of the three-day train card: 78.5, 65.5 and 46.5 euros.

“More expensive than the Orient Express” have chanted and written some of the people who in recent weeks have demonstrated against the huge increases, motivated by the Region as a remedy against overtourism and supported in exchange for reductions or free tickets for a series of season tickets favor of Cinque Terre residents and homeowners. With the burning example of trafficking Riomaggiore-Manarola: for 800 meters for a two-minute journey, on red days you will have to pay ten euros for the outward journey and the same amount for the return journey. Meanwhile, the protests continue. Dem regional councilor Davide Natale announces an appeal to the Transport Regulatory Authority, highlighting how the increases affect sections “destined for public transport” and defines the corrections made in recent days by Genoa as “irrelevant”. And the operators are also on the barricades.
“Everyone makes a fuss – they say from a tour operator specializing in incoming -, Italians and foreigners, also because they have been waiting for the rates for months and in tourism you work year after year. The estimates were made for this season and no one could imagine increases of this kind; the consequence is that the tour operator now makes a loss because it is too late and prices cannot be changed after already confirmed estimates”.
