“The choice I regret most is that I let Kevin Strootman leave”

Eusebio di Francesco, former trainer of AS Roma, regrets that he left Kevin Strootman. The Dutch midfielder was no longer welcome with the Romans in August 2018 and made the switch to Olympique Marseille.

The French paid 25 million for Strootman, but that was not nearly enough to make up for the midfielder’s loss, according to Di Francesco. “I made the wrong choices, but the one I regret the most is the departure of Strootman,” says an honest trainer from Pescara to the Italian Corriere dello Sport.

The disappointing results of Roma were, according to Di Francesco, a logical result of the departure of the Dutchman. “He is an extraordinary player,” explains the Italian coach. “When he left, we lost a huge personality and that was reflected in our results. Suddenly they were not constant anymore.”

The former AS Roma trainer, who was fired in March 2019, also blames Strootman for his departure. “I regret that I did not press for him to stay. I supported his decision.”
