The Chi-Orionid meteor shower lasts this weekend (10-11 December 2021)

KONTAN.CO.ID -Jakarta. The Chi-Orionid meteor shower will last until this weekend (9-10 December 2021). Seen throughout Indonesia, it can be seen from the beginning of the astronomical sunset (50 minutes after sunset) until the next day.

Towards the weekend, it seems that you can watch this astronomical phenomenon when you are free or want to spend time looking at the night sky view. Yes, the astronomical phenomenon of meteor showers will occur again from December 10 to 11, 2021.

If on December 9-10 there will be a peak of the Monocerotid meteor shower, other similar phenomena will also take place.

Quoting from the official LAPAN Space Science Education website, this time it is the turn of the peak of the Chi-Orionid meteor shower that will occur. This is a minor meteor shower whose radian point (where it appears) is near the star Chi-Orionis in the constellation Orion.

Andi Pangerang from the LAPAN-BRIN Space Research Center revealed that all parts of Indonesia from Sabang to Rote Island could see this meteor shower. The intensity also varies, ranging from 2.5 – 2.9 meteor showers / hour.

This is influenced by its radiant culmination at an altitude of 59 – 76 degrees in the north. Under certain conditions, the intensity of the meteor shower at the zenith (the point in space directly above the observer) is 3 meteors/hour.

The peak of the Chi-Orionid meteor shower is easier to see when the weather is clear and in a place free of obstructions or light pollution in the field of view.

Meanwhile, the intensity of this meteor shower will also decrease because the Moon is around the zenith when the radian point is rising.

Yes, at the same time the early New Moon phase will also occur. This is one of the phases of the Moon when the configuration between the Sun, Earth and Moon forms a right angle (90 degrees) and occurs before the Full Moon phase.

The peak of this early Perbani phase occurred starting at 08:35:33 WIB/ 09:35:33 WITA/ 09:35:33 WIT on December 11, 2021.
