KONTAN.CO.ID – Jakarta. The handling of the Covid-19 pandemic has shown improvement, marked by a decrease in the number of corona red zones in Indonesia. However, transmission of the corona virus, especially the Delta variant, is still happening. Recognize the characteristics of being infected with the Delta corona virus in children so that they are not mishandled.
The Covid-19 Task Force noted that until August 22, 2021, there were 53 regions with corona red zone status in Indonesia. This number decreased compared to the previous week, as of August 15, 2021, there were 131 corona red zone areas in Indonesia.
The Delta variant of the corona virus can infect anyone, including children. This is quite different when compared to the previous variant of the corona virus.
According to Healthline, very few variants of the corona virus previously attacked children. The Delta variant of the corona virus has indeed infected many children, especially those who are under 12 years old and have not received the vaccine. Then what are the characteristics of being infected with the Delta corona virus in children?
The Director of the Vaccine Education Center and doctors who were present in the infectious disease division at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, United States told Healthline that the Delta variant of the corona virus was indeed more contagious, including among children. In addition, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Delta variant of the coronavirus is twice as contagious as the previous variant.
Data also show that it can cause more severe disease in people who are not vaccinated. Since most children are not vaccinated, this puts them in a higher risk category for contracting the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

There are several characteristics of being infected with the Delta variant of the corona virus in children. Yale Medicine reports that coughing and loss of smell are less common in the Delta variant, while headache, sore throat, runny nose and fever are some of the main characteristics of a child infected with the Delta coronavirus.
“It’s a bit too early to see a high-quality study in the pediatric literature that reflects the current increase in the Delta variant,” said Dr. Michael Grosso, chief medical officer and chair of pediatrics at Northwell Health Huntington Hospital.
“The most common symptoms in children and adolescents (infected with the Delta variant coronavirus) appear to be fever and cough, with symptoms of anosmia, gastrointestinal symptoms and rash less common,” Grosso added.
Previously, most children with other variants of Covid-19 had no symptoms. However, the Delta variant of the coronavirus may be creating more symptoms in more children than we’ve seen before during the pandemic. “Any [variannya], parents need to remain vigilant against other diseases caused by Covid-19 in young people,” said Grosso.
One of the serious diseases to watch out for is the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). “[MIS-C] is an unusually serious complication of primary Covid-19, usually appearing several weeks after the initial infection,” Grosso said.
Symptoms of MIS-C include: stomach (intestinal) pain, red eyes, tightness or chest pain, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, low blood pressure, neck pain, rash, vomiting.
