The Changing Trends of Reading in the Arab World: Realism During Crises

Sharjah (Al Ittihad)

The “Weekly Publisher” magazine, in its 58th new issue, issued this month, monitored the changing trends of reading in the Arab world, which move from fictional books to realism, especially during crises, such as the Corona pandemic. The magazine’s survey of the opinions of Arab publishers revealed that no less than 70% of the readers are young people, students and young people, and that the majority of them are female. The publishers explained that the fields of books spread in the past few years now include realistic literature, as many tend to read what gives them more reassurance, safety and confidence and contributes to developing their skills.
The magazine, issued by the Sharjah Book Authority, published a report on the partnership, which it described as transcending the boundaries of geography and languages, between Kalimat Group and Penguin Random. The new issue included articles and studies, including a study on “literature of martyrdom” in Latin America, through the novel by Paraguayan writer Alcibiades Gonthalis del Bayi, “The Black Wind”, which reveals the hidden side of the atrocities of tyranny. The magazine published an interview with the Djiboutian novelist Abd al-Rahman Webiri, who emphasized that Arab culture is an essential component of his literary heritage. In another interview, the Kosovar orientalist Dr. Fathi Mahdiu said that contact with Arab culture is rooted in Kosovo and Albania.

A cultural roadmap
In the editorial of the issue “The Beginning of Speech,” the CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority and Editor-in-Chief, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al-Amiri, wrote: “In every new session of the Sharjah International Book Fair, we work to add new ideas and events within the general program of the exhibition, according to the vision of the Sharjah Cultural Project. Which is led, sponsored and supported by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, who drew a cultural road map for us through the enlightenment project five decades ago. Add quality events. Among them came the symposium of the “Weekly Publisher” magazine, which brought together seven writers and researchers, over two days, at the Book Fair last year, announcing the start of preparations for the second symposium within the Book Fair program, next November.
Ahmed Al-Amiri continued that the magazine «its role extends to participation in cultural life and the Sharjah International Book Fair program in particular, through the annual international symposium and its documentary book, which is added to the Arab Library, as a reference for scholars, researchers, university students and those interested in the field that the symposium deals with every year. ».
The new issue of the “Weekly Publisher” included reports on two international poetry festivals in Colombia and Venezuela, as well as news of new publications, book reviews published in Arabic, Spanish, French and English, and studies on sociologist Dr. Ali Al-Wardi and Polish Arabist Katajina Pakhniak.
