The Chilean goalkeeper from Olympique de Lyon regretted the controversial elimination in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Champions League against Chelsea. Tiane feels that arbitration hurt her team and that “it was the only way to get them out of the way.”
Olympique de Lyon and Christiane Endler were eliminated from the 2022-23 Women’s Champions League in the quarterfinals of the competition with a penalty defeat against Chelsea.
The galas had to reverse the defeat at home by 0-1 in the first leg and started on the right track with a 0-2 advantage in the second leg. Already in extra time, when the discounts of the second aggregate were played, the Blues scored the penalty discount that forced them to go to the definition from twelve steps.
In the shootout Tiane Endler saved a penalty, but Olympique de Lyon wasted two shots for the final 2-4 that eliminated the goalkeeper from the Chilean team.
After the duel and in conversation with Chilevisión, Christiane Endler said that “it is difficult to digest the game because I think we did everything possible to win. I think we were dominant throughout the game, we wanted to play from the beginning, just like in the first leg, and they spent the whole game playing time, playing with those football things”.
Tiane concludes that “I think it wasn’t the referee who took the penalty, it was the VAR. I saw the image and it doesn’t seem criminal to me, not at all. He hits himself in the ankle, it’s a bit absurd and I think the feeling now is that they stole the game from us and that it was the only way to get out of the way”.
With the elimination of Lyon sentenced in the Women’s Champions League, now the mission will be to maintain the top of the French tournament, with an advantage of one unit over Paris Saint-Germain.
