The celebrity couple’s two pets showed no signs of illness. A week later, both were dead

Lately has offered great contrasts in the lives of Trine Rein and her husband Lars Monsen.

In the middle between album release and sailing, the couple has had to say goodbye to two of their beloved pets.

“I woke up and discovered that our beautiful cat, Mons, had fallen asleep quietly. He had not shown any signs of illness, except for a strange seizure the day before, which could be reminiscent of a kind of epileptic seizure, “ tells Trine in a video post on Facebook.

She says that as far as they know he has not had anything like this before.

This was almost two weeks ago.

The day after parting with Mons, Trine Rein was to embark on a week-long sailing trip. With her on the trip she had her faithful companion for 13 years, the dog Joy.

“The next thing that happens is that my eye stone, my best friend, and the most loyal dog I’ve ever had, Joy, start to develop a lameness,” she says in the video.

The dog Joy approached 13 years, and has been an active sled dog that has impressed in everything from Femundløpet to Finnmarksløpet.

– The worst that could happen

During the sailing trip, the limping gets worse and worse. Trine took her to the vet twice, without them being able to find anything suspicious.

Joy was still put on painkillers, and received treatment with laser and massage. Nothing helped, according to Trine.

When it did not seem to get better, she took Joy to a specialist. There Trine received the bad news.

– It turned out to be the worst that could happen. She had cancer, she says.

It was not a curable type of cancer, and a few days later Trine and Lars had to make a difficult choice.

‘My husband, Lars, and I decided to let her go. It’s the hardest decision I’re made in many years. I’ve never had to kill a dog, especially not my own, “ says Trine in the Facebook post.

The video shows that there was less than a week between the two deaths.

Together in grief

Good evening Norway, Trine Rein says that it is still difficult to talk about.

– I’m starting to get some distance, so now it’s possible to talk about it without starting to laugh. But the feelings are still on the outside, and the grief is undoubtedly the price of love, she says.

Trine Rein says that the contrasts in life are palpable at the moment. This weekend she participated in the Færderseillasen, which she describes as a “completely raw” experience. And then she was greeted by an emptiness when she came home.

– I have had a fantastic weekend with lots of adrenaline, and then I come home and they are not here. Then grief strikes like a sledgehammer, she says.

She says that she still mourns, and that she sees the dog on the retina constantly. She says she still hears her footsteps, the barks, looking at her in the places she used to lie.

For Trine, it is far too early to think about making new companions.

– It’s too early. There is no one who can take the place of either Mons or Joy. Currently, I live with a heavy feeling in my heart. It is heavy, but they have deserved that place, she says.

She and her husband Lars Monsen were both very attached to the two four-legged friends.

– He was very attached to both Mons and Joy. So he naturally took it really seriously, he too. We had a few days where we were just at home, together. I think he was a little worried about me considering Joy. The bond I had with her was special, and something he had not seen before, she says.

Must stay focused

Trine says that it has been good to be able to be active on the job front at the same time. Because in parallel with all this hitting the couple in private, Trine releases the album «Alive».

– The day after saying goodbye to Joy, completely crushed, I had rehearsals with my band. Nice to get my mind on something else, she says in the video on Facebook.

The album was made in 2019, but was delayed due to the pandemic.

– It feels like a milestone to finally get it released, she says to Good evening Norway.

Focusing on the music will be important for the artist in the future.

– It’s about not letting yourself sink in and knead your grief. It should definitely fit, but it is important to live on. No one who leaves us wants us to stop, she says.
